Don’t be a Drip!

Do you like the rain? It seems that the majority of Tucson’s residents really like the rain. My mom called the rain, liquid sunshine. She was kind of an optimist though I never thought of her in that capacity until after she’s been gone for 13 years, Of course! When the rain is lacking we must then supplement what is missing from the sky and rely on our garden hoses and irrigation systems around our house to offset what nature is not providing. “Okay then pool man what’s the connection with watering my plants and taking care of my swimming pool?” Well audience it’s just this. If you haven’t read “Fill er up” go back and do that now because I talked about what keeps this company in business is folks who continually overfill their pools and this is the number 1, numero uno, #1 way that people destroy their beautiful decks, tiles and even the pools themselves is from overfilling causing water to seep out from on top of the pool tiles and under the cantilever edge. Guess what the second way is! Give up? The foliage which is planted very near the deck must be watered and I like to drip soak my trees in particular but fortunately they are not planted anywhere near a manmade body of water. Just as water hydrates through concrete it does much the same thing through the sand which makes up a large part of our soil. Sand is used in mixing concrete along with lime, cement and other neat stuff that gives man control over his environment. But do we demonstrate control over our environment when we plant sod right next to our deck or when we overlook that water runs downhill a whole lot better than trying to send it uphill? So you place that lovely Sago palm nowhere near your pool but there exists a hill you built up for your palm not remembering that what the palm is unable to drink up will head to the next party it can find which might be the deck of your pool if your deck sits lower and in the path of where the water wishes to travel.  I can tell you’re starting to catch on to this now so just one more thing before I head for a glass of water myself. Please be oh so careful when you’re setting up the nice drip system you are placing on a timer to make your life carefree so you may flit around like a butterfly on a spring day as you enjoy life’s nectar a plenty. Because if your drippers start to leak it may be a long long time before you notice this and there can have occurred much damage when the leakage goes unseen for many months or yes, even years because it’s unlikely you will see any evidence of leaks on your dry rocks covering your little black pipes.
